This Week in Xbox: May 2-9, 2007

We're accustomed to haunting game stores on Tuesdays to pick up new releases, but this week, Friday is the day to swing down to your local retailer, because that's when Spider-Man 3™ hits stores. We'll have a preview up soon—Activision's holding copies close to their vests to keep from spoiling the movie—but in the meantime, you can check out our Spider-Man 3 page for screen shots and the full scoop on the game's features.

Spidey's back in black.

Like previous games in the series, Spider-Man 3 lets you roam free around New York City, stopping crime where it happens. The effect of the symbiotic black costume comes into play as Spidey builds up his rage and eventually lets it loose with explosive new attacks. It's going to be an all-Spider-Man weekend around here, between the movie and the game.

Arcade Threefer!
Okay, it's really a twofer, as one of this week's Xbox LIVE® Arcade offerings bundles two classic arcade games in one package: Centipede® & Millipede®. The other is a game that has the boardgamers in the office nearly drooling in anticipation: Catan.

Do I really need to describe Centipede & Millipede? You're a … a … um … what is that thing in Centipede? You're some sort of pointy creature/spaceship/bug/Orkin man who can shoot, um … lasers? Bullets? Barbs? Pesticide-laced bolts? Anyway, you're shooting something destructive at giant evil centipedes and fleas in a field of, well, regenerating mushrooms. Okay, look, kids, we weren't as analytical about our games in the 80s. If it moved, we shot it, and we were happy playing that way. Now get off my lawn.

Seriously, though, Centipede is simple, fast, fun arcade action, and Millipede takes the same concept and cranks it to 11. If you played it in the arcade, you want it. If you're too young to remember it, download the free trial and see what all the fuss is about.

Centipede gets a 21st Century makeover.

The other title this week is Catan. Given the number of messages I've received asking "When's Catan coming?" (does nobody read the last section of this column?), I think most of you are already familiar with the title, either from playing it, or through the non-stop hyping of the game from all your Catan-playing friends. But if you've somehow missed exposure to Catan, check out developer Big Huge Games' Official Catan website for the full rundown.

Is a Catan victory in the cards?.

Catan is an adaptation of the popular board game Settlers of Catan. It's a classic land rush as you fight and trade with historical personalities such as Alexander, Cleopatra, and Sun Tzu to gain control of territory and resources. Given that the game was created under the direction of Brian Reynolds, co-creator of Civilization II (perhaps the best land-grab game ever), I have a bad feeling I've discovered my next addiction.

Come by the This Week in Xbox feedback topic in the Xbox Forums and let me know what you'd like to see featured on Xbox.com. This topic is for feedback on the Xbox.com website, which is the one place where I can work to make your suggestions happen. As opposed to the other suggestions, such as getting features added to your Xbox 360™, raising your Gamerscore, telling top-secret release dates, or getting Blue Max added to Xbox LIVE Arcade. Sorry!
